Mälardalen University (MDU), MITC, and Stellar Capacity are launching a collaborative project, Smart Factory in Omniverse, that will enable university students and production engineering leaders from Volvo Construction Equipment to build a virtual smart factory and use it jointly for training and development.

The project will leverage MITC's expertise and technical equipment, such as VR/AR technologies and connected production systems, together with the competence and creativity of students, production professionals, and colleagues to create the virtual smart factory.

The project managers are Catarina Bojesson (MDU) and Erik Andersen (MITC). Expert support will be provided by Stellar Capacity in the areas of learning and training connected to leadership and digitalization. The estimated project duration is 6 months, starting in September 2022. The project is funded by the Volvo Preferred Partnership Fund and is the first funded project in the establishment of both a virtual and physical smart factory.

"We are excited to provide a space at MITC where the best MDU students from various educational programs can collaborate to build something that exceeds their individual efforts. The initiative will capture and streamline student projects across courses and create synergies with applied technology projects at MITC." – Anna Bird, CEO of MITC

The Smart Factory in Omniverse project aims to revolutionize how students and industry leaders train, create, and work together as teams, bringing creative opportunities and efficiency to both academia and business. It will serve as a platform where professional leaders can identify challenges in production processes and solve them with the help of students' technical and digital expertise.

"Combining physical and virtual worlds gives us greater flexibility in adapting and developing manufacturing processes. In the digital sphere, we can test innovations that are too complex or costly to test directly in operations. Our decision-making improves when we can use virtual interfaces to monitor the physical world in real time, run simulations, and make better forecasts. Training leaders who can lead and optimize virtual smart factories is the key to the future of industry." – Claudia Olsson, CEO, Stellar Capacity
